Karni Mata Temple Alwar (करणी माता मंदिर अलवर) is a revered hill temple of Maa Karni (मां करणी) set in the Aravalli hills of the Bala Qila (बाला किला) area, about 6.5 km from Alwar city in Rajasthan. It was established by Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh of Alwar during his reign (1792–1815), after his heartfelt prayer to the Goddess was fulfilled, and its worship is today overseen by the Devasthan Department of Rajasthan. Its greatest gathering is the Navratri Lakkhi Mela, when lakhs of devotees arrive for darshan during both Chaitra and Shardiya Navratri. Story Behind Karni Mata Temple Alwar

Karni Mata Temple - Diety and Temple

The story of Karni Mata Temple Alwar begins within the walls of the Bala Qila, where Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh once lived with his queen, Roopkanwar. As it is lovingly recalled by the people of Alwar, the Maharaja was struck one day by a sudden and unbearable pain that no physician or hakim in his court could relieve.

Day after day his condition worsened, until a devoted guard of his darbar gently urged him to turn his heart towards Maa Karni (मां करणी) and to meditate upon her. The Maharaja did as he was advised, and in that moment of quiet faith a white eagle descended and settled upon the Bala Qila. As the ruler’s gaze met the bird, his suffering lifted and he was made well again. In gratitude for this blessing, he established the temple of Karni Mata (करणी माता) within the Bala Qila area of Alwar.

Queen Roopkanwar herself was a devoted worshipper of Maa Karni. It is this faith, carried from the royal household to the countless families who climb down to the sanctum today, that continues to draw devotees to tie a chunri and offer their heartfelt prayers, trusting that Maa Karni hears every wish placed before her.

History of Karni Mata Temple Alwar

Karni Mata Temple Alwar Temple

The documented history of Karni Mata Temple Alwar is closely tied to the reign of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh, the second ruler of the former Alwar princely state, who governed between 1792 and 1815. It was during these years, after his heartfelt prayer to Maa Karni was fulfilled, that the temple was established in the Bala Qila area of Alwar.

From the princely era onward, the image of Karni Mata was worshipped here without interruption, the daily puja and darshan continuing as a living tradition through the generations. In later years the responsibility for worship passed to the Devasthan Department of Rajasthan, which oversees it today. A further turning point came in 1982, when the surroundings were cleaned and a proper road was built up to the temple. Access grew easier, faith among the people of Alwar deepened, and the grand Navratri mela began to take shape at this hill temple.

The devotion of the Alwar royal family reached well beyond the city too. Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh is remembered for sending rich offerings of gold to the celebrated Karni Mata temple at Deshnoke, near Bikaner, the principal seat of the Goddess. That temple in Deshnoke remains entirely distinct from this hill temple of Karni Mata Alwar.

Temple Architecture of Karni Mata Temple Alwar

Karni Mata Mandir Alwar rests in a quiet fold of the Aravalli hills, painted a clean white that catches the eye from a distance against the green slopes around it. A small gateway marks the entrance, near which there is room to park two-wheelers, along with simple water tanks for both visitors and the animals of the forest. From here, more than a hundred steps lead down into the valley, and it is at the foot of this descent that the temple of Maa Karni stands beneath a modest dome.

The sanctum is the heart of the visit. Its inner walls and doorways are adorned with delicate mirror work, tiny pieces of glass set into the shapes of flowers, alongside figures of peacocks and other creatures. Within, Maa Karni is seated in full shringar, dressed in a red and golden poshak, wearing a crown, a bindi upon her forehead and a nath, her form radiant as she blesses everyone who comes.

Beyond the main sanctum, the temple complex holds a temple of Radha Krishna, and close by a temple of Lord Shiva (भगवान शिव) with the Shiv Parivar and two shivlings, and a temple of Hanuman ji. On the ridge above, the road winds onward to the Bala Qila. All around, sambar and deer rest in the open and the air stays pure and still, a place where devotees often feel their tiredness and worries quietly slip away.

The seasons swing sharply here, and most devotees point to the cool months of October to March as the most comfortable time for darshan, with the two Navratri periods being the most spiritually vibrant.

Ideal Season

🔱
Most Vibrant — Navratri
Chaitra & Shardiya Navratri
High Crowds (Mela Season)

Travel Guide

Practical Guide to Visiting Karni Mata Temple

Bala Qila Hills, Sariska Buffer, Alwar, Rajasthan

🪔 Pilgrim Essentials

  • 🌅

    Come Early in the Day

Official timings are not published, and access varies with the season. An early start gives you a calmer descent, cooler weather, and enough daylight for the return climb before the trail quietens.

  • 🧘

    Dress Modestly

This is an active Shakti temple of Maa Karni. Light, modest cotton clothing suits both the sanctum and the walk, and comfortable layers help on cool valley mornings.

  • 💧

    Carry Drinking Water

There are simple water tanks near the gate, but it is wise to carry your own bottle for the step-descent and climb back, especially in the warmer months.

  • 🌸

    Chunri & Mannat

Devotees tie a chunri or sacred thread at the temple while offering their heartfelt prayers to Maa Karni. Stalls near the mela route sell chunris and basic puja items during Navratri.

  • 🎟️

    Temple Darshan Is Free

There is no fee for darshan of Karni Mata. Outside the Navratri mela, however, access runs through the Sariska forest gate, where vehicle charges may apply as part of the buffer zone rules.

  • 🪜

    Be Ready for the Step-Descent

The temple sits in a valley below the road. From the gate you descend more than a hundred steps to reach the sanctum, then climb the same steps on the way back, so pace yourself.

♿ Accessibility Notes

  • 🚶

    The Steps Are Unavoidable

Reaching Maa Karni means going down and back up more than a hundred steps into the valley. There is no vehicle access right to the sanctum, so a reasonable level of fitness helps.

  • 🦽

    Limited Support for Reduced Mobility

No dedicated ramp or wheelchair path is confirmed along the steps. Pilgrims with mobility concerns should plan for uneven, rocky ground and bring a companion who can assist.

  • 👴

    Special Facility During the Mela

During the Navratri mela the administration has arranged a vehicle facility to help elderly and differently-abled pilgrims reach the area. Ask at the entry point about this on peak days.

  • 📶

    Patchy Mobile Network

Coverage can be inconsistent in the valley and forested stretches. Carry your essentials with you rather than relying on a mid-route call for help.

  • 🏨

    Stay in Alwar City

There is no pilgrim accommodation at the temple. Most visitors base themselves in Alwar city, just about 6.5 km away, and treat the temple as a half-day trip.

🧭 General Practical Tips

  • 🐯

This Is Tiger Territory — Stay on the Path

The temple lies within the Sariska buffer, where deer, sambar and occasionally tigers are seen. Never step off the marked route into the forest, and avoid lingering on the trail after dusk.

  • 🏍️

    Vehicle Rules Change During Navratri

On mela days, four-wheelers are usually stopped short and only foot or two-wheeler access is allowed up the hill. Outside the mela, access follows the Sariska forest-gate rules, so confirm locally.

  • 🖼️

    Pause at the Maharaja’s Chhatri

On the approach stands the chhatri of Maharaja Pratap Singh, with its charan paduka and old wall paintings of princely-era court life. It is a quiet, heritage-rich stop worth a few minutes.

  • 👣

    Wear Sturdy Footwear

The steps and valley ground can be uneven, and slippery after rain. Comfortable walking shoes serve far better than slippers or sandals on this descent.

  • Plan the Return Before Dark

Begin your climb back up with daylight in hand. The trail is not lit after dark, and in a wildlife zone it is far safer to be back at the road well before dusk.
