Temples in Chittorgarh – An Introduction
It is not just another district in Rajasthan – but one of the spiritually richest regions of all of India. The imposing fort of Chittorgarh that rises 180 meters above the plains has been home to temples since thousands of years ago. Kalika Mata Temple constructed in the 8th century in the Mauryan period holds the title of being one of the oldest temples dedicated to the worship of Shakti in Rajasthan. Constructed out of the same golden sandstone of which the fort is built, it is an important monument of faith in Chittorgarh. The Meera Bai temple is a testament to the fact that there were other temples too in Chittorgarh than ones of warfare and conquest. It is said that this small and exquisite temple built in honor of Meera Bai, who sang her bhajans devoted to Krishna till her dying breath, is one of the most spiritual sites in the area. Another important landmark in this regard is the three-storey shikhara of the Samadhishwar Mahadev Temple located near the Gambhiri river.
